Early Elections Buys Extra Time for Tal Law

According to the Knesset’s legal advisor, Eyal Yinon, if the Knesset votes to dissolve itself and move to early elections, it will extend the current Tal Law for at least seven months. The reason is that elections will most likely be on 17 Elul, four months from now.

According to law, the deadline for the Tal Law would therefore be extended to three months into the new Knesset, buying time for lawmakers to find a solution to circumvent the High Court of Justice’s ruling of February of this year.

While legislators will be preoccupied with elections, the new reality buys seven months additional time to find a solution regarding the court’s abolition of the law that provide draft deferments for talmidei yeshivos.
