For the participants of the Lag B’Omer event in Meron all of the expense is justifiable but for many, things are getting out of hand. Proponents explain that there is no need to justify the expense since the day is a holy one and the chareidi tzibur at large uses a fraction of the state’s cultural budget, with most of the funds going to non-Jewish events. Opponents feel there is no justification for the expense. Among opponents are also roshei yeshivos, who feel the day represents little else other than bitul Torah.
Whatever the case, dozens of workers are literally busy almost around-the-clock as Lag B’Omer approaches, working to complete roadways, parking areas and the many other preparations that surround the logistical issues being addressed ahead of Lag B’Omer. Rabbi Yisrael Deri, the director-general of the Holy Sites Development Corporation is overseeing the operation the daily HaMevaser reports, working under the guidance of his supervisor, Rabbi Yosef Shvigner.
With 10 days remaining to the big event, tenacious efforts continue towards the construction of a bridge being labeled the “mehadrin bridge” opposite the tziyun of the Rashbi, a bridge which proponents explain will contribute significantly to alleviating the crowding in the area, add to area safety and security, and simply improving the situation for everyone taking part in the event. Experts involved in the project report all the necessary permits have been obtained for the bridge, which they estimate will cost over 400,000 NIS.

If I’m not mistaken they had built a bridge costing an astronomical amount of money for Kohanim, but the government broke it down. With that in mind its difficult to feel bad taking money for this.
In Yore Deah 233, the Chasam Sofer criticizes the celebration of the ‘hilulla’ of R. Shimon Bar Yochi on Lag Baomer in Tzfas. He claims that this celbration may constitute the establishment of a holiday that is NOT in commemoration of a miraculous event, which even he maintains would be prohibited.
Didn’t they have the Mehadrin bridge last year already? And parking lots and roads?? Repairs and imporvments are needed but 400,000 NIS? That sounds like a lot for just one day that thev’e been having for years already…
Unfortunately it has become the largest hangout in the world and not the most tzanua crowd goes. It would be the best place for true Torah observers to be mekarev Jews and make the best kiddush Hashem by practicing middos tovos-no pushing, shoving or rude intolerable behavior. Well there’s always a chance that this year it may happen……
