A meeting took place today, Thursday, 27 Nissan 5772 in Bnei Brak between Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin and HaGaon HaRav Aaron Leib Shteinman Shlita. Apparently, the meeting was at the behest of Rivlin, who wished to speak with the gadol hador about the Tal Law, which grants draft deferments to bnei yeshiva.
Security was heavy on Chazon Ish Street ahead of the meeting and Rivlin was seen entering escorted by Rabbi Yitzchak Ravitz, the son of Rav Avraham Ravitz z”l and one who was very active lobbying on behalf of the law.
The nation’s highest court a number of months ago declared the law illegal, which prompted an urgent meeting with Rav Shteinman and chareidi elected officials and askanim.
Rivlin, who is from a prominent choshuvah Yerushalmi family, speaks fluent Yiddish.
Kol Berama Radio reports Rivlin has been acting as an emissary of the prime minister regarding the Tal Law, and he has also been in touch with Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita and the Belzer Rebbe Shlita.

Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin is an ehrliche Yid.
No matter how ehrliche Mr. Rivlin is, the situation is hopeless since the hilonim are unwilling to exempt Hareidim from conscription, and equally unwilling to accommodate them within either the army or the secular economy. Allowing most Hareidim to claim they are too busy learning to go to the army was and is a face saving way to address the matter – saying one won’t serve because the army and the medinah are treff if very confrontational.
this interestingly enough is due to a new effort we are organized as the charedi forum within the likud party.
Mateh hacharedi balikud.
