A large compost fire at the former Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island has been brought under control.

Firefighters worked through the night Tuesday to contain the blaze,

More than 200 firefighters responded to the five-alarm fire Monday, which jumped across the West Shore Expressway, forcing its closure for a period.

Heavy smoke could be seen all over Staten Island and from eastern New Jersey.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries.
