The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s program aimed at making security updates to the transit system is years behind schedule and could cost millions more than originally estimated, according to a progress report by state comptroller’s office.
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the agency’s capital security program is now nearly six years behind schedule.
One of the major upgrades planned under the program includes adding thousands of high-tech video cameras to the transit system.
The camera installation now isn’t expected to be complete until 2014 and will cost an estimated $516 million, nearly double the original estimated cost.
Despite this, DiNapoli praises the program, saying it will make the system more secure.
