NYC Subway Service Resumes As Crews Fix Manhattan Water Main Break

Subway service is back on track after a large water main break affected 1, 2 and 3 trains for a good part of the morning commute. Clean up crews are still on the scene.

The break happened on West Broadway between Park Place and Warren Street sometime around 3 a.m.

Water flooded the Chambers Street subway station causing disruptions on the 1, 2 and 3 trains.

Service resumed around 8:30 a.m.

The Department of Environmental Protection says crews had to be careful before they started working at the site.

“There was concern that there are a lot of steam pipes underground here. They wanted to be precautious and make sure that there was no impact on the water main on those steam lines. They have given us the green light to move forward with excavating so it seems like we’re all right at this point,” said DEP Communications Director Farrell Sklerov.

Crews are now working to replace the portion of the 12-inch main that broke.
