Switzerland Bus Crash Driver ‘Was Changing DVD’; 22 Children, 6 Adults Killed

The driver of a Belgian bus that crashed in Switzerland killing 22 children and six adults was changing a DVD seconds before the fatal incident, Swiss daily Aargauer Zeitung reported Thursday, citing survivors.

Several young survivors recovering in Swiss hospitals told their parents that they saw the driver about to change the DVD just before the accident on Tuesday evening, the German-language newspaper reported in a joint investigation with Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws.

According to the report, even a temporary lapse in concentration while performing this task could have been enough to lose control of the bus, which crashed violently in a Swiss tunnel.

Twenty-two children and six adults, including the two drivers, died in the accident. Another 24 were injured, including three critically.

The children — aged around 12 — were returning home to Belgium from a skiing trip. The bus, which was carrying 52 people, was one of three hired by a Christian group.
A Swiss police spokesman said the claims were “pure speculation.”

  1. 6 of the dead were Dutch, 16 Belgian.

Horrible accident. Hamokom yenachem es ha’aveilim, whether they’re Jewish, Christian or anything else.

  2. To sayididit: you may have a valid point on the incident that might be important for the police, but it doesn’t come go to write it on an article, why is ywn responsible for what the driver could’ve should’ve or would’ve done, how are they supposed to know, do you expect them to answer? As they say there is no point go crying over spilled milk.

  3. Relax #6! #3 was just pointing ou a typo that yw posted by saying there were two drivers of one bus! He might not have written it the way he wanted you to but most I’m sure most people realize what he was trying to say!!! 🙂

  4. The dangers associated with a skiing trip are completely ignored when making the decision to go. The only frictions are financial cost.

We need to stay home and study torah and not run around so much. Let this be a lesson to us all.

  5. Englishmasmid, your spelling, grammar and punctuation are terrible. Your posts are practically unintelligible! (and i’m English, not yank)

  6. ENGLISHMASMID, and how is YWN supposed to know the answer to your question?
I wasn’t asking YW, or anyone else. All I was saying was that anyone could have changed the DVD and 28 people would still be alive today.
@takingabreak: I highly doubt that. There was another driver who was on the bus and he probably knew how to change the DVD. And even if he didn’t, it doesn’t take a rocket scientest to change a DVD. Somebody could have figured it out, and let the drive concentrate on driving through the tunnel.
And if all the other adults were too dumb to figure it out, then they should have waited to chand it when the bus was stopped.
Its the same things with cellphones. Look down to read a text, or even answer the phone, and the next second SMASH.

  7. It’s perhaps to teach our “heimishe chevra”, who sadly seem to frequently be above the law, that these things do happen…LESSON LEARNED: DON’T BE DISTRACTED WHILE YOU DRIVE!!!!

  8. I dont understand the issue here about YWN reporting. Of course it should be reported lmaan yishmeu veyilmedu. We all do things while driving which we shouldnt do especially at high speeds we should all be careful.
