NYPD Proposes Vehicle Checkpoints Near WTC

The NYPD’s security plan for the World Trade Center site is stirring concern among some lower Manhattan residents.

NYPD’s proposed vehicle security plan for the trade center campus includes checkpoints for private cars, delivery trucks and cabs going to some streets near the site.

The four vehicular checkpoints are proposed for Washington and Barclay streets, West Broadway and Barclay Street, Church and Liberty streets and Liberty and West streets.

There are similar barricades already up near Wall Street. Lower Manhattan’s Community Board 1 President Julie Menin said those checkpoints have been hard on local businesses.

But the NYPD said few people, if any, would be seriously affected.

“The Campus Security plan will not prevent or make it difficult for residents of buildings adjacent to the site from driving home and receiving deliveries,” a spokesman said.

While many residents weren’t happy about the possible inconvenience, they understood the necessities.

A public hearing on the plan will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the New York City Department of Planning in Spector Hall, at 22 Reade St.
