Albany Lawmakers Revise Maps For State Senate, Assembly

Following months of controversy, the state legislature released Monday a revised plan to redraw legislative district lines, though it remains to be seen if Governor Andrew Cuomo will approve the latest effort. The process occurs every 10 years to reflect U.S. Census data.

The governor criticized an original version which he says is hyper-partisan and promised to veto the plan if it was not changed.

The new plan includes a constitutional amendment to change the redistricting process when it’s time to redraw the lines again.

However, Cuomo points out any constitutional amendment has to pass the legislature twice, as well as a public referendum.

For now, he wants the reforms put into law and there is no legislation to do so.

“We’d need a statute to make reform real. We don’t have agreement on the statute and that’s what we’ll be talking about this week with them,” Cuomo told Talk 1300 AM.

The latest plan only focuses on state legislative districts.

Albany has been unable to agree on redistricting Congressional lines.

As a result, the courts are now in control with a federal magistrate set to submit a final proposal later today.
