Israel: 1st Week of New Traffic Cameras

After the first week of the new traffic cameras in full operational mode, monitoring excessive speed and running red traffic signals, 148 summonses were issued for speeding and 24 for running red lights, Israel Police traffic enforcement officials report.

Officials add that for the month preceding the operational mode, three cameras were operating on a test basis, with police issuing warnings. During that period 100,000 drivers were documented speeding, 11% of which were traveling between 110-140 KPH in areas with a maximum speed of 90 KPH. During that period, 1,000 summonses were issued for speeding and 250 for running a red traffic signal.

In the first stage, 28 of the new cameras will be deployed on roads viewed as “red roads” by police, those areas with a record of fatal accidents. Of the 28, 19 will monitor compliance with traffic signals and 9 monitoring speed. At present, the speed cameras permit one to exceed a maximum speed limit by 10 KPH.

  1. Let’s hope to Hashem that many lives will be saved by improvement in care in driving!!! Alevai it should happen everywhere that traffic deaths plague our nation!!

  2. Typical Israeli thinking.
Wouldnt speed be the cause of running red lights. Shouldnt there be 19 to monitor speeding and 9 to monitor traffic lights?
