New York City city is cracking down on illegal taxi cabs, a move that could nearly triple the number of vehicles taken daily off the street.
The Taxi and Limousine Commission is getting ready to strike with an iron fist against illegal cabs.
The agency has more than doubled the number of enforcement agents to 100 and 30 more are in the pipeline.
It’s setting up an entire tow pound for storing seized illegal vehicles.
“Today, we seize about 10 to 15 cars a day. But we issue tickets to several dozen. So, once we get the extra tow pound capacity we can seize every illegal taxi that we find,” TLC commissioner David Yassky told WCBS 880 reporter Rich Lamb on Thursday.
Yassky says it’ll cost the driver $500 to get the car out and if the vehicle is seized three times, the city keeps it and sells it.
He calls that a strong message to illegal operators.
