At least 49 people were killed and more than 600 people were injured Wednesday morning when a train packed with rush-hour commuters plowed into a station platform in Buenos Aires, Argentina, state media reported.
The number of casualties could increase, emergency services director Alberto Crescenti said, according to the state-run Telam news agency. Shaken passengers told reporters the crash, which happened at one of the city’s central train stations at Plaza Miserere shortly after 8:30 a.m. local time, sounded like a bomb blast.
“We all fell to the ground. It was horrible,” one woman said.
Authorities believe there were problems with the train’s brakes, Transportation Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi said. Several passengers said that the train felt as if it were going faster than it normally would when approaching a station, according to Telam and the Buenos Aires Herald.
The crash caused the train’s second section to be pushed 6 meters into the first section, Schiavi said, according to the Buenos Aires Herald. The train was traveling at 26 kilometers per hour (16 mph) when it crashed, he said.
