Crews this morning are on the scene of a massive water main break that has flooded parts of the Lower East Side. It happened sometime before 7 a.m. at the intersection of Delancey and Bowery.
As of 8:30 a.m. water was still spewing from underground, bringing traffic in and around the neighborhood to a halt.
Authorities shut off water to businesses in the area to make repairs. It wasn’t known when the water would be turned back on.
Heavy delays are also being reported in both directions on the Williamsburg Bridge.
As a result of the water main break, Delancey is closed from Elizabeth to Christie streets, and the Bowery is closed from Delancey to Broome.
Only the M103 bus is affected.
The cause of the break was not known. Officials are working to determine the extent of the damage. At least one business has a flooded basement.
The water main dates back to 1906.
