Gunman Who Had Dispute With Mayor Opens Fire in Middletown, N.Y. Courthouse


A gunman opened fire in a Middletown, N.Y. courthouse Wednesday, shooting and wounding a court officer before he was shot several times and killed, a law enforcement source tells NBC New York.

The source says the gunman had legal troubles in the past and is believed to have had a longstanding dispute with the mayor.

According to the source, the gunman went to the city building, which also houses City Hall, to confront the mayor on Wednesday.

An eye witness told MidHudsonNews that a man walked into City Hall, walked toward City Court while carrying a shotgun and opened fire. The suspect pulled up on a motorcycle, parked it next to an adjacent bank. A rifle sleeve was strapped to the side of the bike.

A source tells MidHudsonNews. that the perpetrator has been shot and killed. A court officer was being treated at Orange Regional Medical Center and is okay, the source said.

The eye witness said he saw at least one unspent shotgun shell lying on the ground outside City Hall. City Police, State Police and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are on the scene investigating.
