NYS Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver criticized as “seriously flawed” legislation that would allow churches and other religious organizations to hold worship services in city schools.
“It would open up the schools to anybody,” Silver told a small gaggle of reporters outside his office Wednesday. “ It might include the Ku Klux Klan.”
The Senate this afternoon is expected to approve legislation that would overturn a city policy banning churches from using schools for worship services even on weekends. It would allow church groups access whenever it is deemed not disruptive of normal school operations.
“ I think the language of the Senate bill opens it up to too many groups that should not be exposed to children,” Silver said.
