Netanyahu: Only Military Strength Guarantees Security

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who today announced plans to visit the U.S. in March, said turmoil in neighboring Arab states and threats from Iran show that Israel must build up its military.

“In such a region, the only thing that ensures our existence, security and prosperity is our strength,” Netanyahu told his Cabinet today in Jerusalem in remarks broadcast on Israel Radio. “We are obligated to continue to develop the military, economic and social strength of the state of Israel.”

Israeli leaders have been warning publicly that time is running out for a military strike that could stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Feb. 3 that “there is still time and space to pursue diplomacy” with Iran.

Netanyahu will visit Washington in early March and speak at the annual conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, according to an announcement today. Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman arrives in the U.S. Monday, Feb. 6, for a series of meetings with government officials, his office said.

The Israeli prime minister clashed with President Barack Obama during a visit to the White House last May over the issue of negotiating borders with the Palestinians. He was later given 29 standing ovations when he addressed a joint meeting of Congress.

  1. Our strength has three parts. What our enemies think that they have to gain from peace, our spiritual strength (which also includes zechut avot, etc.) and our military strength. Thus Yaakov gave a gift, davened and prepared for war.

  2. Is he seriously for real??
I mean how stupid can he be to honestly think that only strength guarantees security? You would think the prime minister at least knows the BASIC FACT that Hashem runs the world. Especially since Israel is a country that has seen open nissim many times!!!
    Seriously.

  3. If EY did not have the strongest military in the region, it wouold have been destroyed by the Arab armies years ago. Yes, its good to know that reliance on the Ebeshter will add to our strength but don’t assume for a minute that alone would be sufficient.

  4. That statement virtually guarantees that Netanyahu will fail. Our history has shown, again and again, that those who boast of their their strength are slapped down by G-D.

  5. deepthinker- remember the chazal as who inherited the gift of “nevuoh” (prophecy) after the churban habays….hint- they are not the smartest people in the world….

  6. oh please.. do you honestly think that he is going to want to sound like a “religious fanatic” to the world even if he believes it in his heart?

  7. Hashem is the true source of our strength and it is unfortunate that Netanyahu will not recognize it; however hishtadluth is nessacary; all the tefiloth and yeshivoth could not stop the nazi, russian and islamic hordes during the days in which our ancestors were helpless sheep in the lands of wolves and lions. Anyone who does not show at least some hakorah hatov to the IDF for protecting life especially since chazal say we owed some hakorath hatov to the mitzrayim kal vachomer we should show some appreciation to our deluded brothers whom despite their delusion spilled their blood so that in part Ponovezch and
Mir can continue to exist and Bnei Barak is not open to the pogrom hordes!

  8. Netanyahu is a big liar; while he claims that Israel must build its military strength why has he recently approved incredibly damaging defense cuts; so damaging are these cuts that Israel will cancel its tank and apc development programs, suspend missile defense programs (arrow, iron dome and david’s sling(his government just issued a plea for additional funding from Obama for missile defense to cover for the loss of funds that his himself directed!!!!)The Israeli government is full of self serving corrupt liars who would see the destruction of their own people frum and nonfrum for the maintenance of their own power.

  9. I think we should definitely BE VERY CAREFUL what we are saying here as this could likely be Motzei-Shem Ra. As we see that his words could have different connotations as some have mentioned in earlier comments.
