According to a Chadrei Chareidim report, a number of days following the petira of Rebitzen Batsheva Kanievsky ob”m, Rav Moshe Cohen, the gabbai of the Lederman Shul on Rashbam Street in Bnei Brak visited the home of HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita and asked if there was a need to check the mezuzos. The rav explained they were recently checked and as such, at present, there was no need.
A number of weeks later, the gabbai visited the gadol hador again, with the same question. The rav instructed him to take them down and send them for inspection. Close to 30 mezuzos were inspected and all found to be kosher. Three mezuzos in the ezras nashim, where the late Rebitzen davened, were found to be problematic. They were not pasul, but simply not mehudar.
Those mezuzos were brought to Rav Chaim who instructed the gabbai to replace them.

#2 true daas torah – Your statement to msol is out of line and uncalled for. Personally, I agree with him. I think that this is just another story blown out of proportion. Think about it. Does it make sense to say that the Rebbitzin died because the mezuzos on the Ezras Nashim were not mehudar?! Does that really make sense to you?! I’m sure Rav Chaim would tell you, “Shtus V’Hevel!”
Of course it makes sense. The mitzvah of mezuzah is a protection, and a less mehudar mezuzah means a less optimal performance of the mitzvah and thus less protection. It’s no different from wearing an inferior seat belt, or getting a weak vaccine.

To number 1. The point of the story is to illustrate the sterling middos of R’ Chaim. I would have said, nudnik, don’t drey a kup and look for things, I told you several weeks ago the mezuzos don’t need checking. However, the Rav humored him instead and told him, go ahead, check it again if it makes you happy.
