Mayor Bloomberg said today that he has “100 percent confidence” in Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
“Commissioner Kelly should not step down,” Bloomberg said.
Kelly’s tenure as head of the NYPD is under increasing scrutiny that he appeared in a film viewed by some as anti-Muslim. The film was shown to police trainees.
Kelly has apologized for his involvement in the film.
“The Third Jihad” was shown on a continuous loop on the sidelines during NYPD counterterrorism sessions.
Ray Kelly said yesterday that he had sat for an interview in 2007 because the filmmaker had “bona fides” in television and with the White House.
“While it never became part of the department’s curriculum, and was not authorized for any training, regrettably it was shown in a room where officers who were filling out paperwork or on break from actual training had an opportunity to view it over an extended period in 2010,” Kelly said in a written statement.
“I offer my apologies to members of the Muslim community, in particular, who would find the film inflammatory and its airing on Department property, though unauthorized, to be inappropriate,” he wrote.

The Muslim community is providing free publicity to the 3rd Jihad film by making headlines out of it.
