New York City fire officials say the years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attack have been the busiest in history at the nation’s largest fire department.
On average, the department has responded to more than 420,000 emergency calls every year since 2002. Last year, it responded to 488,017 calls, the third highest ever. The record was 507,017 in 2010.
Steve Cassidy, president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, said Tuesday the crews are doing more with less. He says it’s a testament to the hard work of the firefighters who take on more responsibility as numbers dwindle and demand skyrockets. There are about 11,500 firefighters in New York City.

…Yet Mayor Bloomberg wants to close firehouses and cut engine company staffing. ..on top of all of this is the lawsuit which has held up the next class at the fire academy, putting a strain on the firemen on the job and costing big in overtime..total insanity!!
We’ve got Hatzolah. We’ve got Chaverim. Maybe “we” need…..
Without knowing all the facts its hard to know if it is indeed “total insanity”.
12786- Do you know how many fireman respond to each call? Do you know the length of each call? Do you know how many of these calls are for a cat stuck in a tree or for a fender bender?
Just knowing the number of firefighters and mumber of calls each year isnt much.
#3 without being specific I can tell you that I have knowledge of many aspects of FDNY affairs. The understaffing of companies and the Fire Academy issues are serious problems along with the Mayors attitude towards making cuts in FDNY services. I stand with Steve Cassidy in total support of the FDNY membership and their need to get their job done right and safely. Every NYC resident should be in complete support of FDNY..they are there for all 24/7/365
