For those who think that Scott M. Stringer, the Manhattan borough president, wants to play it safe by running for re-election, or perhaps for comptroller, rather than for mayor, consider this: he has just persuaded prominent national Democrats to join his 2013 campaign.

Weiner, whom many considered to be the front-runner before he resigned amid a scandal over online messages. Another new consultant, Mark Mellman, was the lead pollster for the 2004 presidential campaign of Senator John Kerry and for the re-election victory of the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, in 2010.
