Manhattan: Elevator Company Under Investigation Following Deadly Accident

Many New Yorkers ride elevators up to offices or apartments every day without thinking twice.

But something went horribly wrong at a Madison Avenue office building Wednesday when Suzanne Hart, 41, was crushed to death in a freak accident.

Now residents are questioning the basic safety of elevators.

The Madison Avenue building remains closed off as the Department of Buildings investigates what happened.

Just hours before the accident, Transel Elevator, Inc. was performing maintenance. Those procedures are now under review.

The elevator jumped as Hart was getting in, crushing her inside the shaft between the wall and the elevator car.

According to the city, the building’s 13 elevators have amassed 56 violations over the last 10 years.

Transel’s elevators throughout the city are also being inspected. The Madison Avenue building may not reopen until Monday, as the DOB is inspecting all of the elevators to ensure that they are safe.

  1. Don’t worry on one will be responsible or charged for this tragic story because the owner of this building is the city of New York. Unless they can find an escape goat who is not a city worker and only then they will find a something criminal.
