A woman was crushed to death when an elevator she was stepping into suddenly shot up, trapping her between two floors, said FDNY officials.
Two people inside the elevator suffered minor injuries.
The elevator, initially reported as having plunged inside a shaft at 285 Madison Avenue and E. 41st Street, rose unexpectedly as the woman entered the elevator on the first floor, said fire officials on scene to reporter Ti-Hua Chang.
It is not clear what caused the elevator to suddenly move rapidly at about 10 a.m.
Published reports indicate the office building in midtown Manhattan is home to several companies including Y&R advertising, formerly known as Young & Rubicam.
Y&R had announced just days ago that it planned to vacate the building for a new headquarters, reported the Associated Press.
SkyFoxHD was over the area as emergency vehicles from the FDNY, NYPD and Buildings Dept. surrounded the entrance of the building.
Madison Ave. was closed between E. 40th Street and E. 42nd Street.
