Brookyln Lawmaker Arrested – Again

Federal authorities have arrested a Brooklyn lawmaker on fresh corruption charges just weeks after a jury acquitted him on unrelated bribery charges, according to the FBI.

An indictment unsealed Tuesday alleges that Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. , 41, solicited more than $250,000 in bribes and accepted thousands in bribe money in 2010 and 2011 from a carnival promoter and two undercover FBI agents posing as out-of-state businessmen and real estate developers, authorities said.

Boyland is accused of promising to help the promoter and the two agents secure leases and permits for carnival business and other deals.

“The charges announced today are all the more astonishing in light of the fact that Boyland allegedly committed much of the criminal conduct after he had already been charged in another bribery case,” said FBI Assistant Director in Charge Janice Fedarcyk. “Boyland was unaware that it was two undercover FBI agents with whom he was arranging quid pro quo deals, and to whom he insisted on speaking in person to avoid the recording of incriminating phone calls. Recording phone calls is not the only method the FBI has available to fight public corruption.”

In early Novermber, a jury in Manhattan acquitted Boyland of charges in a separate case in which he was accused of taking a well-paid no-show job in exchange for doing political favors for a corrupt hospital executive, the AP reported.
