While the intelligence community has been carefully monitoring the bloody violence in Syria, there is another component that is now rapidly becoming a priority for the IDF. As the international community does almost nothing to remove dictator Bashar al-Assad, who continues to use his military against unarmed civilians, the IDF is preparing to possibly take up position along the Israel/Syrian border to prevent fleeing refugees from attempting to make their way to northern Israel.
While such a move is not imminent, commanders are being prepared for such an eventuality, which may become a reality without prior notification. The instability of the situation in Syria compels officials in Israel to prepare for any and every eventuality.
The international community eulogized Assad sometime ago, but one cannot know for certainty if he will be ousted as he continues shunning the international community, as well as the Arab League, which recently suspended Syria’s membership over Damascus’ indiscriminate slaughter of anti-government protestors. This past weekend was accompanied by more violence and bloodshed, including RPG rocket attacks against the Bashar-aligned Baath Party headquarters in the Syrian capital.
