Religious and community organizations rallied and held prayers Downtown Friday to protest what they say is the undercover profiling of Muslims by the New York City Police Department.
Muslims from communities around the city gathered in Foley Square to tell Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg that they are tired of being spied on.
A recent Associated Press investigation revealed police department surveillance on Muslim life in the city, including police infiltration of mosques and student groups.
Many who gathered for the demonstration say they’re law abiding citizens, not terrorists.
“We’re Americans, we’re taxpaying citizens. It’s like I’m being black twice. I’m Muslim and I’m black and I have to go through this? It’s not right,” said one protester.
“People worrying about who’s sitting next to them at a coffee shop, who’s praying in their mosque. And to create this kind of uneasy environment is actually going to hurt the police more than it is gonna help them,” said another.
Those gathered in Foley Square were also expected to participate in a march to police headquarters.

This is happening to muslims and non muslims all over the world and is why the surveillance is taking place. Because of attacks against western and even islamic targets by muslim terrorists. The surveillance is not cause we suspect all muslims, but because, be honest, any terrorist attack anywhere in the world is likely to be islam connected. They should be demonstrating against the muslim suicide bombers who allegedly give Islam a bad name. But no. They are silent about that! Shtika k’hodoh
