Utility Seeing 30-40 Percent Hike in Electric Rates

According to a report released by the daily Maariv, Israel Electric Company officials are planning to seek a one-time 30-40% increase in electric rates. The utility’s director, Eli Glickman, convened a board meeting in the Hadera power station to discuss the matter, explaining the sharp increase in the cost of fuel compels the move. He explained that the cost of producing electricity will double by 2012. This includes the various forms of energy used to manufacture electricity.

Glickman explained that while such a move would be viewed and intolerable by the general public and politicians will distance themselves from such an initiative, there simply is no alternative, pointing out the utility company cannot continue without the increase for its productions costs are increasing too rapidly.

  1. Instead of raising rates, maybe they should look at the fact that the average salary at IEC for a worker is 3X the national average salary and look to make cuts internally on the costs.
