Former Head of Saudi Intelligence Warns Israel Against Attacking Iran

Addressing a Washington, DC audience, Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal warned an Israeli attack against Iranian nuclear facilities could have “catastrophic consequences” as well as making Tehran even more determined to build a nuclear weapon. Prince Turki was head of Saudi Arabian intelligence services, stepping down in 2006. According to reports from the FARS and Reuters news agencies, he remains an influential person with the country’s ruling family. He also warns that Iranian retaliation will be widespread, including US interests.

The issue of Iran’s nuclear enrichment program has become increasingly pressing following this week’s release of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) report, which basically confirmed Israeli fears, that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is closer to nuclear independence than reported by Western intelligence agencies. The report supports Israeli concerns that Iran is dangerously close to building an atom bomb.

The Saudi prince expressed his support for stricter sanctions against Iran.

  1. He’s right. Even though the Saudis (and the US) would be rejoicing if Israel destroyed Iran, it would cause a major backlash in all Islamic countries. So the Israeli Air Force will probably have to plan on who to retaliate if need be, and let the Mossad do its work (wouldn’t it be horrible if a poorly assembled nuclear device exploded somewhere in Iran).
