More voters disapprove of President Obama’s handling of the economy than ever before, according to a poll released by CBS News on Friday.

About 60 percent of voters said they disapprove of the president’s handling of the economy, the highest level that CBS has polled, while just 34 percent approve of the job he is doing on the matter.

Nearly double the number of poll respondents think the economy is getting worse than better: 32 percent said it’s worsening, and only 18 percent say it’s improving. About 86 percent of respondents think the economy is in bad shape now with just 13 percent who see it in good shape, CBS found.

Obama scores much better on other issues like foreign policy and handling terrorism, but his weak numbers on the most important issue of the day are a major drag on his approval rating. It is once again underwater in this poll, with 47 percent disapproving of the job he’s doing and 43 percent of voters approving.

A subsample of the poll had Herman Cain in the lead with GOP primary voters at 18 percent support, with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich tied at 18 percent support. Republican voters said by a large majority that Romney was the most electable candidate in the field, but almost six in 10 voters said they cared more about backing a candidate who shared their views than one who could beat Obama.

The poll of 1,182 adult Americans was conducted from Nov. 6-10 and has a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points. The GOP poll of 382 voters had a margin of error of plus or minus five percentage points.
