“I know that upstairs, someone is looking out for me. I got my life back, a gift. I am thankful to my parents, family and friends and the marvelous doctors, who literally saved my life” sated Adel Sheetrit, 20, from Netivot.
Adel was injured when a rocket fired from Gaza slammed down in Beersheva over two months ago, claiming the life of Yossi Shushan HY”D. Shushan, a 38-year-old resident of Ofakim died of his serious head injuries sustained on August 20, 2011.
Adel was standing near Yossi, and she was very seriously wounded, transported to the trauma unit of Beersheva’s Soroka Medical Center in traumatic arrest. She had serious wounds to her abdominal cavity and pelvic region. Her parents, who were with here, were moderately wounded in the attack.
Adel underwent life-saving surgery and eventually regained consciousness and was taken off the mechanical respirator. She has since undergone numerous surgical procedures due to the nature of her injuries, as well as reconstructive surgery to correct the damage to her body from the shrapnel.
She recalls that day, and on Monday, 3 Cheshvan, she told reporters how they heard the siren and her dad stopped the car and they ran towards the nearest building. She was next to her dad and her mom was covering her sister with her body. “I looked up to the sky and literally saw the Grad rockets falling. I began running and my dad was behind me. I don’t recall hearing the explosion”.
“I do recall falling on the sidewalk and there was a lot of blood coming out of my stomach. I fell on my father and I don’t remember more than that”.
Doctors are pleased with her recovery and in the coming days, Adel will begin rehabilitation.
