US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford has left Damascus to head home, apparently taking a break until mid-November due to rising security concerns as Syria becomes increasingly unstable. Seeking to paint the reality in a more politically acceptable tone, the ambassador’s return home is diplomatic visit which will last for a number of weeks.
By most accounts, Syrian leader Bashar el-Assad’s days are numbered, joining the growing list of Arab leaders who are facing their final days in power. Preceded by his father Hafez el-Assad, the Assads have ruled over Syria for over 40 years, and most analysts believe the end is quite near, an end that will be applauded by many, following in the footsteps of Libya’s Gaddafi.
America and the international community has been more than patient with Assad, who has already threatened that any attempt to topple his administration will result on a missile strike against American bases in the region and Israel, without any hesitation.
