Over 2,000 mispallalim were on hand for slichos on Wednesday night at Kever Yosef in PA-occupied Shechem. To the horror of the group, upon their arrival at the holy site they saw that once again, Arabs desecrated the tziyun as they have done many times in the past. Swastikas and other graffiti greeted mispallalim.
Gershon Mesika, who heads the regional council, decried the desecration, referring to those responsible as “barbarians”, adding “those who pathologically defile the holy site cannot be regarded as human beings”.
The slichos were headed by a number of prominent rabbonim, organized by the Shomron Regional Council, headed by HaRav Elyakim Lebanon Shlita. Mispallalim included Yidden from all walks of life.
When Israel abandoned Kever Yosef and turned it over to the PA (Palestinian Authority), the Oslo Accord architects, including President Shimon Peres promised that the PA would honor and respect the Jewish holy site as Israel does with holy sites of other religions. In addition, the Oslo proponents assured us that Jews would have unimpeded access to the site. Unfortunately, both promises have proven to be a far cry from reality.
Israel’s chief rabbis are calling on religious leaders of all faiths to publically condemn this latest attack against the tziyun of Kever Yosef.
