NYC: MTA Begins Subway Cell Service On Select Platforms

Heading underground no longer means losing cell phone service at six Manhattan subway stations.

Riders with AT&T or T-Mobile service can now talk or text while on the platforms.

The pilot program was launched by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority at stations along 14th Street, including the A, C, E and L stops at Eighth Avenue, the 1,2,3 station at 7th Avenue and the L, F and M stop at Sixth Avenue.

It’s also running at the C and E stop at 23rd Street.

Service is only meant to extend on to platforms, meaning riders won’t be able to carry their conversations onto the trains.

Other cellphone carriers are expected to take part in the program soon.

The MTA says 30 more stations will be wired by the end of the year on Manhattan’s West Side.
