Sunday: NYC – Regional Commuters Brace For Higher Port Authority Tolls, Fares

Tolls on the Port Authority’s bridges and tunnels and PATH fares are set to go up at 3 a.m. Sunday.

Peak E-ZPass tolls will go from $8 to $9.50 and the peak cash toll price will be $12 on the George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bride and Outerbridge Crossing.

Tolls are set to rise to $15 by December 2015 after a series of increases.

The Port Authority has also extended peak hours.

On weekdays, peak hours will run from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Weekend peak hours will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

PATH fares are also going up a quarter to $2.

The Port Authority has said the money raised will go toward road repairs and infrastructure upgrades, as well as the rebuilding effort at the World Trade Center.

One a few days before the proposed hikes were to take effect, AAA began an attempt to stop the hikes, saying they violate federal law.

The auto club cites a federal court ruling that says tolls must be used for facilities that have a close and functional relationship with bridges and tunnels, and argues that funding the World Trade Center’s redevelopment would be illegal.
