Lebanese Military Moves To High Alert Along Border With Israel

As Israel contends with the imminent unilateral PA (Palestinian Authority) declaration of statehood later this month, the diplomatic row with Egypt and increasing military threats from Turkey, Lebanese military forces on Tuesday moved to their highest possible level of alert along that country’s border with Israel.

It appears the move was prompted by Israel’s placement of new surveillance cameras in the border area, particularly in proximity of the Fatma Crossing, which has been closed since 2000, when then Prime Minister Ehud Barak ordered the unilateral withdrawal of IDF troops from the security zone.

The security zone served as a buffer between northern Israel and Hizbullah terrorists operating in southern Lebanon. Since the last IDF soldier returned home in 2000 the border crossing has not been active. Nevertheless, the deployment of cameras seems to have resulted in the Lebanese army taking up battle stations along Israel’s northern border.

UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) forces responded to the area in an effort to prevent a confrontation. The multinational force maintains a presence in the former security zone, acting as a peacekeeping force between Israel and Lebanon.
