Woodbury, NY – Big chunks of New York state’s main highway remain closed as flooding brought on by Hurrican Irene gradually recedes.
As of 6 a.m. Monday, the New York State Thruway remained closed in both directions between Nyack and Harriman and from Amsterdam to Canajoharie.
NYS Thruway both directions from milepost 30.1 to 45.2 between exit 15 (I-287/NJ) and exit 16 (Route 17), all traffic is currently banned between Exit 15 and Exit 16.
The Thruway Authority overnight announced flooding had receded at several points along the 641-mile superhighway. Drivers were still warn to use caution.
Thruway spokesman Michael Sullivan said parts of the highway south of Albany were under 3 to 4 feet of water.
