The Southern District Prosecutor’s Office announced that a final decision has been made and an indictment is expected today against 42-year-old Elad resident Asher Dahan, who has admitted to the July stabbing death of Rabbi Elazar Abuchatzera ZATZAL, known as Baba Elazar.
A Beersheva court extended Dahan’s remand to permit him to undergo psychological evaluation towards determining his mental status and his ability to stand trial, to be held accountable for his actions.
Dahan has been undergoing a barrage of evaluations, and there are opinions among the experts going both ways, that he is indeed stable and was aware of his actions on that day, while others feel he should not stand trial.
The prosecutor has decided to move ahead with the indictment, accepting the opinion of the experts who feel Dahan is competent to stand trial. The murder indictment is expected to be filed with the Beersheva District Court on Tuesday, at which time the state will ask that the defendant be held without bail pending the outcome of the trial.
