Career politician David Weprin was making at least $100,000 as a Wall Street banker when he voted to hike his own salary as a part-time City Council Member from $90,000 to $112,000 in 2006, according to a report in PolitckerNY today.
The campaign of businessman and congressional candidate Bob Turner (R) is demanding that Mr. Weprin reveal exactly how much he was being paid by Wall Street when he voted himself that $22,000 raise.
Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) yesterday signed an Ethics Reform Overhaul bill into law to, among other things, make the outside incomes of legislators transparent to the public.
“Exactly how much was David Weprin being paid on Wall Street when he gave himself a $22,000 taxpayer-funded raise as a part-time City Council Member?,” asked Turner campaign spokesman William O’Reilly. “We know it was at least $100,000, but it may have been many times that figure. Mr. Weprin needs to explain to the public who paid his part-time salary how much he was making and whether he still considers that 25% raise appropriate.”
Mr. Weprin is a career politician who has held or run for four separate political offices in the past two years — City Council, City Comptroller, State Assembly, and now Congress. He does not live in the 9th Congressional District (Brooklyn-Queens) in which he now running to replace disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D).
Mr. Turner (R) a former television executive who has lived his entire life in the neighborhoods of the 9th Congressional District, is running for Congress to help get America’s economy moving again. He has been endorsed for Congress by both Republicans and Democrats, including former New York City mayors Ed Koch (D) and Rudy Giuliani (R). Mr. Turner’s business career has taken him around the globe. He has conducted business and formed programming partnerships in places ranging from Tbilisi to Delhi, Manila to Moscow.
The special election will be held on Tuesday, September 13.
