Residents will soon have a chance to give Port Authority officials their two cents about a controversial proposal to raise tolls and fares. Public hearings will be held Tuesday at several locations in Manhattan, Staten Island and Queens.
Port Authority officials have proposed raising tolls on all of its bridges and tunnels, as well as fares on PATH trains. In some cases, commuters could end up paying nearly double what they currently do to travel between New York and New Jersey.
Port Authority officials say the increases are unavoidable due to necessary infrastructure work, but both Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie must sign off on the plan. They have each expressed serious reservations to such a large hike.
Residents on Staten Island said they would be particularly hard hit.
