With the Labor Day holiday weekend rapidly approaching, Acting Superintendent Preston L. Felton today announced that state troopers will deploy a variety of targeted traffic patrols during the holiday period, with the hope of preventing unnecessary highway deaths and injuries.
The Labor Day holiday weekend traditionally is one of the state’s most hazardous for highway travel, second only to Thanksgiving, according to Felton. Consequently, he has ordered maximum staffing over the weekend.
Every available Trooper across the state will be out on patrol, working so others can safely enjoy the holiday, Felton said today. Each Trooper has been directed to enforce the law aggressively and fairly.
Last year, sixteen people were killed in traffic crashes over the Labor Day weekend, nine fewer deaths than the previous year. Troopers during the 2006 holiday weekend responded to 538 crashes, in which another 134 persons were injured.
Motorists can assist by safely reporting dangerous, aggressive or suspected impaired driving to police.
As always, our troopers will also help ensure all vehicle occupants – especially children – are properly restrained, Felton said. Through aggressive enforcement we will work to ensure passenger restraint compliance and deter distractive driving.
On our roads, speed, impaired driving and not buckling up are the three greatest causes of highway deaths and injuries, Felton said.
One Response
Be tough all the time regarding driving rules and regulations. A horrible MVA ended with 4 deaths this weekend since no one was belted and speeds were excessive. Klal yisroel is valuable, include safety into your new years resolution.
