Warning For Downtown Lakewood

lakewood cover.jpgAll those living in Lakewood should remember NOT to leave any GPS, or other electronic devices in view when parking ANYWHERE IN LAKEWOOD. Unfortunately one reader did not heed this call before and paid for it today when he parked in the (jam packed) 2nd street parking lot (between Clifton & Madison). In broad daylight he came back to his car after doing some back-to-school shopping on Clifton, when he discovered his car window shattered and GPS gone.

(The reader also wrote the following to YW: “Yes, it was probably a Mexican loitering around, which brings back the old subject of downtown Lakewood becoming an area full of garbage!! Unfortunately, rumor has it many business want out because the streets are filthy, and customers are shopping elsewhere mainly because the woman are heckled etc.!!

Its time for the LDC and the UEZ to step-up and clean up our town from all this filth and illegal immigration. And to all of you here on YW, remember a lot of the blame is on ‘unzerer’, for employing these illegals and renting them their investment houses to live in (and kill a beautiful neighborhood while they’re at it). This topic has been discussed umpteen times here and throughout the heimishe news outlets. So far its just getting worse!! Your thoughts and solutions please?”

Signed,

Looking for direction.)

  1. If the “greedy” landlords and the cheap business owner’s didn’t hire them then we would not have this issue. You can argue that you need stay in competition with the other business’s in town. My response is how did you do it before “they were around”. You hired them to make more money and now the thought of paying a legal decent person, paying a bit more and making a bit less is unthinkable at this point. This is what is hurting us all.

  2. this seems to be connected to several earlier posts of redifas ht’avos. Why do Lakewood people living and working in Lakewood need GPS systems mounted in their cars? If they are traveling and they need directions, then fine but put it away when you arrive at your destination. The only reason to leave it in your car stam azoi, is for the coolness factor . They are very cool and helpful when necessary but we don’t all need them and those who do need them do not need to leave them on show. THIS IS CALLED CONSPICUOUS CONSUMPTION. iT IS A GOYSHE TREND AND AGAINST MANY TORAH PRINCIPLES.

  3. Unfortunately I have heard quite a few stories of smashed windows and missing navigation systems recently in Lakewood. There is no question that those that employ all the illegals are to blame for many of Lakewood’s crime- and other- problems.

  4. I think that the Mexicans are a reminder to all people in Lakewood that we are still in galus and not to get too comfortable.

  5. WELL I WOULD DIAGREE WITH U & SAY THAT THE ONES DOING THE CRIME ARE THE ONES WITHOUT THE JOBS SO GIVE THEM ALL JOBS & THE CRIME RATE WILL GO WAY DOWN

  6. It seems like the Lakewooders are happy to give these ilegals buisness. Every time I pass by the Hispanic barber shop on 2nd street, there’s frum Yiden in there waiting to get a haircut from a Mexican.

  7. Also, even if you remove the unit from the windshield, take the extra 10 seconds to wipe of the circular mark the suction cup leaves on the windshield. This is a dead give-away that there might be one hidden somewhere in the car. If you take the unit with you but, the mark is still visible you still run the chance of having your window broken when try to look for it. Wipe the mark off & you avoid the smashed window to begin with.

This advice given to me by a cop in Brooklyn who caught one of these ganovim.

  8. ONE SHOULD KNOW BETTER, WISE UP AND DONT LESVE ANYTHING IN YOUR VEHICLE WHEN PARKED, WETHER IT BE A GPS UNIT CASH CHANGE OR A SMALL CHILD, NOT ONLY IN LAKEWOOD BUT ANYWHERE.

  9. I can’t believe talk like this so openly. I can only assume its because you have a false sense of security by posting on an anonymous blog. I’d like to hear you all talk like this about Mexicans around them when they clean your house, take care of your kids, keep your beis medrashes and shuls clean and looking good. I’d like to to hear you speak like this with any Mexicans you might do any business with.

When did being a decent human being go out of style? How about Chillul Hashem. This blog is public goyim could read they way you talk here. How about Yidden being above hatred, labels, racism and being judgmental.

You have no idea who stole this GPS. For all you know it could have been a drugged out white person or even (gasp!) a Jewish kid who wishes he had what every tom, dick and yankel has.

Regardless of who committed the crime this is not how Yidden are supposed to talk. Would the Chofetz Chayim condone such loshon about any other human being?

I hope the people who comment here don’t represent the main stream of the yeshivish and/or frum world. It’s a sad social commentary. I wish the YW editor would advise people to speak like menthsen and not behaimahs.

  10. dear chaim rubin people dont hate mexicans. they are just frustrated by the lack of gov management of the situation.a lot of them are hard working decent people.but when there are hundreds of them loitering unemployed depressed and angry no nation would act right.thats a governments job’ and it is very frustrating that nothing is being done

  11. #14 IT IS OUR RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH THAT LETS US POST WHAT WE FEEL, AND TO IT BEING AN ANONYMOUS POST, I PERSONALLY DONT EMPLOY MEXICANS, SO I HAVE NO BASHFULLNESS TO WHAT I SAY.

Editors Response: Free speech? Sure. Big talker.

Walk over to the next crowd of 30 Mexicans – and tell them what you think of them (we will cover your “beating” live on YW).

There is no free speech on YW.

  12. EDITORS OF YW

TRUST ME THIS ISN’T JUST TALK I’D HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM WITH THAT AT ALL, SET UP A TIME AND PLACE, BRING YOUR REPORTERS AND CAMERA AND ILL SHOW YOU JUST THAT.

  13. BP (#2) is accusing Lakewood people of having GPS units unnecessarily, just to be cool.

Living in BP, one is unlikely to need a GPS unit. Almost everything one can want or need is available on nicely numbered, square, comprehensible blocks and avenues. In Lakewood, more often than not, people have to drive several miles to get places, and even get lost within Lakewood proper. In and around Lakewood, once you get off the highways and out of the downtowns, you’re dealing with miles and miles of winding back roads with poor signage, inconsistent addresses, and poor to no lighting.

There is a very good case for GPS in Lakewood.

  14. illegal immigrants working or not working is one discussion. Making sure you don’t park your car with expensive valuables in plain site while a crime spree is happening is another.

Last year my friend was pick pocketed and when he eventually realized he told me he knew it was some black kid. The next day the police called and said someone was held at a store while trying to use the card after it was reported stolen.

I don’t want to say Loshon Hora in Elul, but let’s just say it wasn’t a black kid who did it.

Even if you do go and assume the person who stole the GPS was a Mexican, what makes it worse is the tone in these comments. Such venomous words.

Come to my neighborhood. You’ll have to deal with a lot worse then just broken in cars.

Sometimes its just a matter of yidden speaking with more aidelkeit.

  15. Why can’t an intelligent person learn to use a map like we used to do in the olden days, and some of us still do.The Mexicans need the GPS to find their way back home, hopefully.

  16. Anyone who needs a GPS system should own one if they can afford it. Who cares what you used years ago, I am not looking for a water hole when I need a bathroom. Could be a reminder that we are not at home, even in Lakewood, ir hatorah,,,,,,,,

  17. firstly tthere is nothing wrong with owning a gps if u can afford one and need it why not. also basmelech using a map is wasting time something that bas melochim shouldn’t be doing lastly I just spent 10 weeks in the mountains working maintenance in a camp with ten of your very own lkwd mexicans they didn’t steal or cause other trouble. chances are it was a crazy jewish kid (theres plenty in lkwd) who wanted som extra shtick. MOSHE4765 if u want I can give you the phone number of my crew chief and hell arrange a “meeting”.

  18. I feel bad for the guy who had his windshield smashed. Not only did he have a monetary loss but, to add insult to injury, he now has had so far 28 guys beating up on him for having the temerity of owning a GPS.

Kick him in the face good while he’s on the ground.

  19. for all those living in monsey and needing a gps, we have a gmach for them-really! check your community connections magazine.

  20. Ah. I remember the good old days as a kid we used to come to lakewood to my aunt for Shabbos (1970’s).
Back then one of the coolest things that I used to love about Lakewood is the fact that you don’t have to lock your car doors. As a kid fromm Brooklyn, that was pretty cool.

  21. Talk about hypocrisy. Chaim Rubin has so much invective against the Gedolei Yisrael on his blog, it makes the comments here look like apple sauce! I guess respecting the Mexicans is more important than respecting our Gedolim, eh Chaim???

  22. To everyone,
Stop trying to find a mussar haskel in every post that’s posted on Yeshiva World. This is not a wake up call that we are in galus and it’s not a lesson about conspicuous consumption. Gimme a break! It’s a normal part of life that things get stolen.
Not every fender bender is a wake up call. (At this rate, I won’t be getting any sleep.)
By the way, to those who post WAKE UP CALL to every piece of news, I’m still trying to figure out what I’m supposed to do once I wake up, besdies for smelling the coffee, that is. Perhaps you can enlighten me.

  23. before the mexicans came along we complained that the blacks were committing all the crime in town.it happens to be that we always have a higher crime incidence rate this time of year, because many welfare cases are relocated now.the police usually catch the perpetrators by october and everything calms down until end of next summer(when we start all over again).there are many mexicans who are hard working and honest.to look down on any jewish landlord or business owner that deals with them is unfair.unfortunately along with the hard working family oriented ones came many “cousins” who are in hardcore gangs, dealing drugs, and attacking our children(there have been many incidences -all kept quiet of course-thanks shenky!).the downtown is now filled with businesses that do no service for the residents of our town.the stores on the corner of clifton and second never have customers buying anything.they are all paying rents higher than on 13th avenue.
i was told the only reason there needs to be so many mexican storefronts is because the mexican, and colombian drug cartels send out billions of dollars in goods to the usa each year.this money needs to find a way back to them.they send out representatives to sign leases on stores, and employ a few illegals to run them. they then proceed to wire large amounts of money back home.therefore making the money legitimate through the “sales” of the business.HOW CAN WE LET OUR DOWNTOWN,THE FACE OF OUR TOWN,BE RUINED BY SUCH BUSINESSES?THE DAY WORKERS WANT TO WORK.THESE BUSINESSES BRING DRUG DEALERS AND CRIMINALS TO DO BUSINESS HERE.THEY ARE THE REAL PROBLEM.WE MUST TELL ALL OF OUR DOWNTOWN BUILDING OWNERS TO STOP RENTING TO THESE MEXICANS.THE BUILDINGS ARE ALL OWNED BY PEOPLE IN OUR TOWN WHO PRIDE THEMSELVES ON THEIR GOOD NAMES.THE RABBONIM MUST GET TOGETHER AND MAKE SURE THESE PEOPLE LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY.IF THEY CAN’T ABIDE BY THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE, THEY SHOULD SELL TO SOMEONE WHO WILL.OUR DOWNTOWN COULD BE A SYMBOL OF PRIDE FOR THIS TOWN,BRING IN TOURISTS,TAX REVENUE,AND BE A PLACE THAT EVERYONE IN TOWN CAN ENJOY.CALL THE VAAD ,CALL YOUR MAYORS,OR GET A NEW VAAD ,AND NEW MAYORS.WHATEVER IT TAKES,WE CAN DO IT (IF WE WANT)

  24. There is a far bigger problem with losing your GPS. The latest crime is for a thief to steal your GPS, turn it on, press directions to ‘HOME’ and then go to your home, knowing you’re not there, and then breaking in to your property. BEWARE!

  25. Leaving a GPS visible in your car anywhere, not just Lakewood, is an invitation for theft. Any policeman, anywhere, will tell you this. In halacha this would be classified as a true “pshia”. This is not a Lakewood, Mexican, illegal immigrant problem.

By connecting all these other problems to this one, you are just muddying the waters.

  26. I thank Hashem every week for my Mexican cleaning lady, thank you very much. I would never manage without her and happy to have this much help. Sorry for everyone who’s suffering bec of the Mexicans but I’m personally benefitting. (although I wouldn’t mind if they wouldn’t crowd up downtown Lakewood and move somewhere further out.)

  27. my schvigger taught my wife that she is supposed to daven for the general well-being of cleaning ladies. These include mexicans in lakewood, hungarians and spanish in miami, polish in NY, and PiliPino in toronto.

  28. Thank you Chaim Rubin (#14). Very well said.

There’s nothing more repulsive than a frum jew spouting racism (while, no doubt, complaining about antisemitism).

The Mexican woman who helped raise my wife (who lost her father as a young child) is a tremendous ba’alas midos and ba’alas chesed. There are many Jewish people who could learn midos from her – including many of the commenters here.

  29. Sometimes its just a matter of yidden speaking with more aidelkeit
    ——–
Yes, we must say “Thank you for robbing us and bringing loud music, drugs and a lowlife culture to our neighborhoods.” And while we are at it, we must lambast our fellow Jews who are fed up with being victims and having to live with this garbage (as opposed to those community members who really are guilty of renting to illegals, and they indeed deserve blame and criticism).

I have a friend named Derrick Nelson whom you may have heard of. He wants to visit a Jewish home and see what Shabbos is like so he can find out when he can break into houses and get hold of silver bechers etc. Can I set him up with you, Rubin?

Simon – it is not only gedolim that Rubin bashes – it is also many singers who, while they are not as perfect as he is, do more chessed than he will ever do in two lifetimes.

  30. To Chaim Rubin #14

After you get your GPS stolen and your window cracked then talk besides there’s nothing wrong with being upset at the Mexicans they do make downtown lkwd look like Mexico and stop being so official with being racists better try to come up with a way to keep things more safe.

  31. i dont think we should be saying that we hate the mexicans. but the situation is getting out of hand. it is extremely uncomfortable for a lady to walk down clifton ave with all those mexicans hanging around at the corners. something has to be done about them and they should be shipped back to mexico. than your gonna say-we were once immigrants too so dont say that. but the jews build themselves up and had decent jobs. look at all the rest of the immigrants, they use all our tax money for their health and schools and what do they turn out to be? a bunch of guys hanging around and making trouble around lakewood. if they would be building themselves up and not getting into trouble no one would complain.

  32. to 1,
    37, 46-48,
    I find your talk shocking.
( And as for what Rubin may or may not have said, Well i am not a bookie in YW, and i can only comment on what i see in THIS thread. )

  33. #49:”than your gonna say-we were once immigrants too so dont say that.” Don’t have to; the chumash already does (Shmos 23:9). Don’t worry; it’s only a mitzva d’oraysa, and it’s still a couple of weeks until RH and YK. Hashem probably won’t remember what you said by then; who needs to be so careful about that?

  34. Well, I am sorry, but I find GPRS theft shocking (I do not understand why, in what is supposedly the greatest country on the earth, an honest citizen cannot forget a GPRS in his car and come back to find it untouched as it should be) and divrei kitrug about fellow Jews during Elul, for the sake of ma yomru hagoyim even more shocking.

  35. And I want to add that this is a classic case of someone who is merciful to the cruel (criminals – remember illegal aliens are CRIMINALS even if they do not steal GPRS units) and cruel to the merciful (bnei Torah including unzerer gedolim and baalei chessed).
