Judge To Decide Fate Of Nadvorna Purchase Of Scranton Building

court hammer2.jpgThe fate of the former East Scranton Intermediate School may finally be decided this week, nearly a year after the Scranton School Board agreed to sell the vacant property to Nadvorna Chassidim – as reported HERE on YW. Lackawanna County Judge Carmen Minora is scheduled to entertain a school district petition Thursday to sell the building to Rabbi Alter Rosenbaum for $400,000. A city businessman is challenging the sale, as is a local taxpayers group.

Nadvorna in Brooklyn wants to use it as a school for Jewish families who would relocate to the city from New York.

  1. Sammygol,
First off who thinks that this is due to anti-semitism? I believe that the person who challenged the sale is jewish although not frum. The school property while a city property was sold at market value fair and square. The person only challenged the sale after he realized the upsize in profit if the Nadvirna all relocate. Scranton is a dead city. Go search the real estate listings and you will find stuff for below 20K (two family houses)! If the Nadvirna would move in, the need for housing would drive all the prices up. This guy took a gamble on the fact that the Nadvirna were dead set on relocating to Scranton and away from NY. I believe that he bet wrong. If they lose today they will not relocate to that area. Then the judge should force him to pay the 500K for the abandoned building that without the extra people moving in, the city and the community will no longer need.

  2. hakol biday shamayim…. lev melachim beyad Hasem!!! that building as far as I know has been empty close to ten yrs!!! if Scranton got chassidim it may not be so dead anymore 🙂
