  1. Never had a chavrusah but from what I understand ‘Chavrusah grabbing’ is like shidduchim. You try people out and if you dont like their style of learning you say ‘sorry, your not for me’ and then move on to another!

  2. With all due respect, can someone please explain to me the logic behind this Tumult? If one knows he learns well with someone else, before this happens then whats the purpose of even goign out there? and if someone does not know people beforehand would it not make sense to talk to the rebbeim or friends in the yeshiva to figure out who would be compatible? It seems a little strange that something as important as your chavrutah should be decided by something comparable to coin flip. If two guys who are completely incompatible happen to come from the same street entrance and bump into each other, well there you go! you have found your learning partner. By the way if it does not work out it takes about a week and a half to figure it out, by then you may have missed out on several good opportunities for Chavrutot! As someone who was in yeshiva and knows the trials and tribulations of finding a good chavrutah, how could this system make any sense? My question comes not from a sense of sarcasm or indifference, rather if someone more familiar with the process could explain to me the logic of it, I would greatly apprecaite it. Besides that, I am happy to see our boys are back in action and sustaining the world with their learning!

  3. I hope this doesn’t turn into a “Chavrusah Crisis” for those who can’t find anyone with the same learning style.

  4. sounds like speed dating
so whats going on in the tumult outside? what was wrong with the chavrusah from last zeman? (if it aint broke-dont fix)
why couldnt they pre-arange this before bein hazmanim?

  5. 5: There’s quite a bit of checking out a potential chavrusa; it’s not just the flip of a coin. As you note, you were in yeshiva and it was difficult to find a good chavrusah. It’s not much different here. Chavrusah tumul is stressful for many people.

8: Huh? Maybe it WAS broke. Anyway, variety is the spice of life.
    Before bein hazmanim? Why?

  6. For those of you who never learnt in Lakewood (as is apparent form the comments above) let me explain. There are hundreds of new bochurim/yungerleit that come each zman who obviously couldn’t continue with their last zman chavrusah. (I know that they don’t accept new bochurim Elul, but this applies to other zmanim). Also, most people are frankly sick of their chavrausah from last zman, and if they are not they will be the following zman. Just a fact. Third, there are so many different chaburos learning different things, your last zman chavrusah may not be learning the same thing as you this zman.

In response to Bizrizut, most people learn with people they already know (either from Lakewood or yeshivas they learnt in previously) or are matched by mutual friends who know how each of them learn. It is the farthest thing from a coin flip.

  7. another cool thing about MTJ is that I know of at least 5 pairs of chevrusah that have lasted at least 7 years, They say the masgiach reb Birembaum ztl had a second seder chevrusah for over 50 years. I know the two yeshivas are completly different but it is still cool.

  8. Gemarokop, let me get this straight.

The process is the farthest thing from a coin flip because the potential chavrusos are people they already know or they are matched by mutual friends who know how each of them learn.

Yet the fact is, that at the end of the zman most people are frankly sick of their chavrusos, and if they are not they will be by the following zman.

Wouldn’t all the “mutual friends” be sick of each other at some point?

  9. This is great stuff for YW. And the pictures are an amazing Kiddush Hashem.
The Chavrusah Tumult, for those who have never experienced it, is exhilarating, exciting, and fun, mixed with seriousness, trepidation and anxiety.
The reason behind it is so that the Yungerleit and Bochurim are pressured into making a decision so that the process doesn’t drag on for weeks – which it surely would if not for the Tumult. Those that are remaining with their Chavrusahs from the last Z’man, won’t be part of the Tumult, except, perhaps, in the role of a “Shadchan” between two potential Chavrusahs.
Obviously, there are always a number of these Chavrusahs that don’t end up working out, and are fixed during the Z’man.
I don’t know how far back this Minhag goes, and/or who started it. I’d be interested to find out, if anyone knows. But I know at least 30 years ago, when I was a Bochur in Yeshiva, we already had Tumults.

  10. yosefcg – Most people going to Lakewood learned in probably 3 yeshivas prior, between Mesivta, Beis Medrash and E’Y. So anyone new to Lakewood probably know about 100 other people, and those 100 probably knows about 100 more. That’s a lot of people to get sick of. And besides you are not sick of them permanently, you just need a change. I think many of us have learned with many of the same people over the years on and off.

Also you only need friends form the past for the first couple of zmanim. Over time you get to know even more people, so the pool is great enough to work with.

  11. taakeh what if theres an odd number of students , i feel so bad for that guy , he nebuch gets UNGIZETS from day 1…without even ever going out cause hes in the freezer till tu bishvat..ya aiaiaiaia ya aiaiaiaia

  12. Frumblogger-
Yes the tumul is not for people who are keeping their Chavrusa from last zman.
Every body else: All your questions are exactly why there is a tumul. People asking “information” such as compatability and learning style questions from friends of potential matches. Other people doing stam a chesed and suggesting Chavrusos for friends. “Lihagdil Torah Uliha’adeeruh.”

Nomeless: Have you ever heard of Partners In Torah? It’s a great program, try it you’ll like it! Google it and you’ll get all the info you need.

  13. Yatzmich,

In the next gilgul, if I have the zechus to be born a man, I’ll try it . But in the meantime, my son and husband DO agree that partners in Torah is a great idea, thanks!

  14. I’m sure many of you have read this story (I think it was in Touched by a Story).
There was a bachur who got great chavrusas every zman. His friend couldn’t understand why this bachur always had the best chavrusas, with no problems, year after year. Finally the friend decided he was going to follow the bachur around to see what his secret was. He saw that the bochur got offered to be chavrusas with great guys right away and in a few minutes was done with the whole process. Then the bochur, with his friend trailing him, went inside the building to the payphone. He made a phone call and said: Hi Ma, it’s me. I got my chavrusas all set up. You can stop davening now.”

  15. Nameless:

Partners in Torah is for women also, they will hook you up with a woman. Try it, you may find it to be one the most rewarding experiences in your life.

  16. nameless,
My mother, who is 66 years old K”H has been a partner for about 5 years. So far she has been succesful in causing one woman from the sticks in Pennsylvania to consider divorcing her goyisha husband and two women from different parts of the country to get a kosher kitchen. Don’t wait till you’re a Gilgul. “Hasken Atzmicha B’proizdor, Kiday Shetekonays L’traklin.”

  17. Yatzmich,

Yoshar Koach! you just inspired me, thanks.
And kudos to your mom, may she be zoiche to lead people down the right path ad biyas goyel.
