Former Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton appeared together Monday night for a private banking event — the first New York outing for the Texas-based 43rd president since Osama bin Laden was killed, a person familiar with the event said.
The two presidents were part of a private panel hosted by Wealth Management Americas, an arm of UBS bank, at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Manhattan’s West Side.
The appearance came less than a week after President Barack Obama visited Ground Zero in the wake of a U.S. military raid that killed bin Laden. Obama invited Bush to come to New York, but the former president declined, citing his wish to stay out of the limelight.
White House advisers had also spoken to Clinton aides, but the 42nd president, who is based in New York, also didn’t go, citing scheduling issues.
But Monday found the two most recent former presidents both on the West Side for the event, which was moderated by UBS Wealth Management Americas CEO Bob McCann, and focused on a new report by the bank reviewing the role of government in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. The report recommends fixes including entitlement reform and a revamp of the tax code.
A person familiar with the event said bin Laden’s death was the first topic raised, but declined to go into more specifics about what either Bush or Clinton said on the subject.
