NYC Councilman Wants To Ban Vehicles From Central & Prospect Parks

A city lawmaker wants to turn Central Park and Prospect Park into no-drive zones.

City Councilwoman Gale Brewer (D-Manhattan) will introduce a bill today that would restrict vehicles from traveling along the main, 6-mile loop in Central Park and inside Brooklyn’s Prospect Park.

To reduce congestion and limit the chance of accidents, Brewer is siding with cyclists over cars and taxis because, she said, biking is healthier and safer than driving.

Cars could still travel along the four roads that traverse the park east to west under her proposal, but those lanes don’t interfere with cyclists and runners on the park’s main drive.

Several council members floated a similar proposal in 2006, but it never got out of the Transportation Committee.

Mayor Bloomberg at the time opted to reduce driving hours in the park instead.

The mayor has been a strong proponent of bike lanes across the city and his Transportation Commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, is widely regarded as one of his most controversial agency heads for her fervent support of expanding cycling paths.

Neither would comment on the bill, but Brewer said she anticipates support from the administration.
