NYS Assemblyman Dov Hikind is spearheading a campaign to collect unused cell phones and distribute them to senior citizens. Phones can be used to dial 911. Sudden illness. Emergency. Accident. Attempted mugging. So many reasons for a senior to call for help.
“Now there is a way for an elderly or disabled person to feel empowered — to dispel that vulnerable feeling. Many people have replaced their old cell phones with newer models,” says Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn). “These phones are lying in drawers, taking up space and collecting dust. Yet they seem too good to discard. But in an emergency, they may make a vital difference. For even though they no longer have service, they are still programmed to call 911.”
The cell phone collection drive runs from now through Labor Day. There are three convenient neighborhood drop-off centers, which will accept cell phones from Monday through Thursday:
* ASSEMBLYMAN HIKIND: 1310 48TH St., 9AM – 4PM
* BORO PARK: HI TECH 2000, 4624 13TH AVENUE, 11AM – 6PM
* FLATBUSH: HI TECH 2000, 1400 CONEY ISLAND AVENUE,
between J &K,11AM – 6PM.
