NMB: Shooting Near Schools Forces Lockdowns – Including Yeshiva Toras Emes


North Miami Beach, FL – Reports of a shooting has two schools on lockdown just as students were about to go home for the day.

According to North Miami Beach Police, officers had approached a group of possible gang members Tuesday afternoon, at around 3, at the corner of 167th Street and Northeast 12th Avenue when shots were fired.

According to a police spokesperson, the shots were exchanged between two, or possibly three, rival gangs. Once police approached the group scattered, and now police are searching for them.

Miami-Dade Police are also assisting. Near the shooting, they held three in custody for questioning. The Miami-Dade officers confiscated book bags and a cell phone that may contain pictures and/or video of the scene.

As a precaution, police ordered the lockdown of John F. Kennedy Middle and North Miami Beach Senior High.

Police are now setting up a command post at Northeast 166th Street and 10th Avenue.

K-9s and a police helicopter are also on the scene to assist in the manhunt. Roads have also been closed, as police have established a perimeter in the area. Traffic in the area has been blocked off from 167th Street to 163rd Street and 10th Avenue to 12th Avenue.

Sources tell YWN that Yeshiva Toras Emes & the Rohr Middle School were also on lockdown for approximately an hour and a half. The lockdown occurred during dismissal. As of this posting the Yeshiva lockdown has been opened, but many streets are still closed off.

  1. BH the younger children have all been dismissed without incident. (Rohr Middle school has a later dismissal) Yasher Koach to the entire staff who worked quickly to insure the children were all brought inside and kept busy and safe. the children (at least mine) were not told of the incident.

  2. BH nothing happened tragically.
    Its a big brachah to have wonderful weather in south florida in the winter, where children can walk/bike to school or walk to shul on shabbos. You cant say the same about the snowy cold north.
