One sixty second phone call to this toll-free number could save our community millions of dollars: 800-513-1556.
With just two weeks left in the Legislative session in Albany, now is the time to act to help families who are struggling to pay yeshiva tuition. Assemblyman Vito Lopez & Senator Marty Golden have introduced legislation that would allow middle-class parents to deduct the cost of private school tuition from their state taxes and poor families would receive an actual tax credit. This could save average families in our community thousands of dollars each year.
But we must ACT NOW. The legislative session in Albany ends June 21st.
Please call Governor Spitzers office today at 800-513-1556.

“A tempest in a teapot”
A deduction is worth 5% at maximum rate for someone who is doing well. Paying $5,000 tuition means a savings of $250 (not thousands).
A credit to the less well off is also almost worthless as their state tax is minimal.
Most people how sending to Yeshivas are not middle classes! They have large families and don’t pay any taxes; we need to stop this pandering from marchers and positions! only tuition vouchers will help us!
bp dunno know about you, but there are quite a chevra with large families, tuition fees who DO pay taxes.
If you have a large family you’ve got large state (no AMT on state) deductions so again the total value is limited. Do the math.
It will only allow some guys behind the desk to use it as an argument that you can now afford more tuition and there goes your savings! It will in total cost the state plenty (which will also have to include other parochial and private schools). The yeshivas may benefit a little, but as usual, the yeshiva parent will get shafted.
Gvald, how can you post such a stupid comment using the premise of a $5K tuition bill. I myself have only 2 little ones in yeshiva so far and I’m already paying $15K. The average frum family with 5-7 kids is paying in the range of $40K for tuition, tax savings at even 5% is indeed thousands. You probably lie about your income to get tuition breaks so maybe it’s only $5k, but for the rest of us honest hard working parents who are paying full tuition, the times of $5K tuition bills are long gone, if they ever existed at all.
