A Chicago police officer was shot in the leg late Sunday afternoon near Damen Avenue and the Stevenson Expressway, officials said.

The officer, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was being treated at Stroger Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, Superintendent Jody Weis told reporters at the hospital.

About 5:30 p.m., Harrison District officers pulled a vehicle over at Polk Street and Francisco Avenue in the West Side’s Lawndale neighborhood. As the officers approached the vehicle, the suspects inside it tried to run over the officers and fled the scene, Weis said.

Ogden District officers were monitoring the radio and saw the fleeing vehicle exit the Stevenson at Damen, Weis said. The suspects’ vehicle hit a police car before stopping, he said.

An officer tried to remove the suspects, and shots were fired that wounded an officer, Weis said.

The injured officer is 37 and a nine-year Chicago police veteran, Weis added. The suspects from the vehicle were taken into custody, but Weis didn’t say how many there were.

Weis would not take any additional questions from reporters or give out any further information, referring all other questions to the Independent Police Review Authority, which investigates shootings involving Chicago police officers.

Curtis Tarver, a spokesman for the authority, said an officer fired a weapon during the incident. He could not say, however, who shot the officer or if the wounded officer was the same one who opened fire.
