Waterbury: Jewish community has Safety Fair

wb cover.jpgThe Waterbury Jewish community hosted their first annual Health and Safety Fair this Sunday. An overcast morning gave way to a sunny day. Hundreds of community members and their children gathered on the Yeshiva Campus on Buckingham Street, the old UConn Campus. Among the presenters was the local Police and Fire Departments as well as the Department of Health and Campion Ambulance.

Children had a chance to take a look at the police cars and ride the police bicycle. Many of the kids sat in the cab of a fire engine and donned the firefighter’s gear and learned how to get out of a house full of smoke, with Waterbury Fire Department’s smoke safety house. The smoke house teaches the children how to safely exit a home when filled with smoke and simulates such an experience.

The Department of Health shared health tips with the residents and raffled off a child’s car seat. “This gives the community an opportunity to see our first responders when they’re not on a call and gives the children a chance to learn safety from those who are out in the field” remarked Chaim Gewirtzman from Community Services and Resources the organization that arranged the event.

The event was sponsored by ShopRite of Waterbury and WaterburyBlog.com
