Another archaeological find, children’s graves, has unexpectedly complicated the planned construction of a parking house on the site of an old Jewish cemetery in Plzen.
The investor, Israeli company Plaza Centers, will have to modify the project again as Jewish religion bans transfers of graves and manipulation of remains.
This is already the fifth change in the project. “This is quite a unique find, which should be declared a part of cultural heritage,” archaeologist Jiri Orna said.
Orthodox Jewish groups have proposed that the access way be built to bridge the burial site in the planned building.
Further negotiations about the issue are to be held in Israel on Friday, Plaza Centers representative Martin Kodrle said.
Some time ago, archaeologists found remains of the 15th century Jewish cemetery at the same place in Plzen. The find met with international acclaim. A number of rabbis from several countries came to Plzen to see the graves. They consented to the parking house being built on the site if the graves are neatly arranged and bridged so that the building skelet does not touch them.
